Heat Pumps work by moving heat to or from one area to another. In warmer months, the heat pump acts as an air conditioner by moving heat out of the building. In cooler months a heat pump works by transferring heat from the air outside into the building.
A typical heat pump contains a fan, compressor, coils and a two-way valve managed by an electronic control unit all housed within a vented metal cabinet.
Operation of the heat pump is automated -- it switches itself between heating and cooling mode as needed. Heat pumps are located outside the building reducing indoor noise associated with some other methods of air-conditioning.
Installing a heat pump in conjunction with a gas or electric furnace can save money on the overall energy costs of heating and cooling a home or business.
