Heat Pumps

What is a Heat Pump
A heat pump is just an air conditioner that can reverse its process. A central air conditioning system cools your house down by extracting the heat that is in your home and transferring it outside and releasing it through the outdoor unit (pictured below). A heat pump just reverses that process by absorbing heat from outside. It then transfers that heat through the refrigerant lines to the indoor coil mounted in line with your furnace. The heat is then released it into your duct system by air flowing over the heated coil. This process works even when its below freezing outside.

Installing a Heat Pump in your home can drastically reduce your utility bills since a heat pump is the only source of heat that you can get more than a dollars worth of heat for every dollar spent in energy. Example: an electric furnace produces a dollars worth of heat for every dollar spent in electricity. It has a 1:1 ratio. A gas or oil furnace will always have a by product since it is a fossil fuel. This means if you buy a brand new 95% furnace then it will convert .95 cents out of every dollar spent in fuel, to heat your home. .05 cents of that dollar goes out the chimney. Currently the best furnace on the market can achieve 98%.

A heat pump can transfer up to $3.00 of heat for every $1.00 spent in electricity depending on the outside temperature. The warmer it is outside, the more heat the heat pump can transfer inside your home.

Installing a heat pump in conjunction with a gas or electric furnace will save money on the overall energy costs of heating and cooling a home or business.
